What is Bluegrass?
Bluegrass is a popular form of American roots music that is performed and enjoyed
worldwide. Bluegrass fans and pickers include all ages and a wide range of interest
groups (click here for more).
From a musical standpoint, bluegrass has two primary characteristics that differentiate
it from other genres:
- Instrumentation. Bluegrass is played on acoustic stringed instruments including
mandolin, banjo, guitar, fiddle, string bass, and resophonic guitar.
- Vocal style. Bluegrass singing often includes multi-part high lonesome harmony
that is inspiring and evocative.
Bluegrass Roots and Branches
Bluegrass has a rich legacy going back to 1946 (click here for history of bluegrass).
The roots of bluegrass include folk, old time, blues, Celtic, gospel, and early
country music.
Todays branches of bluegrass include Americana, jambands, new acoustic, newgrass,
alt.country, and rockabilly (Elvis Presleys first recording session included a
bluegrass classic).
